Generation No. 4

6. JOSÉ FERNANDO ARCHULETTA4 HERRERA (PEDRO ALCANTAR BUSTOS3, JOSÉ JOAQUIN ARCHULETTA2, TOMAS1) was born July 02, 1836 in Santa Cruz de la Canada, Santa Fe Co., New México, and died December 14, 1915 in Alamogordo, Otero Co., New México. He married (1) MARÍA JULIANA GOMEZ MARTIN September 24, 1856 in Santa Cruz de la Canada, New México, daughter of JA MARTIN and MARÍA GOMEZ. She was born February 13, 1832 in Santa Cruz de la Canada, Santa Fe Co., New México. He married (2) MARTA RODRIQUEZ 1873. She was born May 1835 in New México.

Notes for J
OSÉ FERNANDO ARCHULETTA HERRERA:
Padrinos: Seledon Herrera and Maria de la Cruz Lopes (grandparents). Fernando's Grave is unmarked in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
Fernando was born in Santa Cruz de la Canada, founded in (1695), located thirty miles north of Santa Fe.

Fernando's oldest daughter, Maria Alta Gracia, married Antonio Nunez Valenzuela, on July 1892 after her husband William James Norris Gill died in Nogal on April 11, 1889. Two children were born, Rosalia and Benancio Herrera Valenzuela.
Maria and her father Fernando petitioned the court on several occasions. William didn't leave a will for his real estate and personal property. On April 23, 1889 Fernando requested that they appoint him as administrator of William's estate. Fernando also accused Antonio Valenzuela of squandering William Gill's money and believed that Maria was greatly influenced by this man.
William had owned gold mines in Nogal and White Oakes.
On May 9, 1889 the court appointed Maria as guardian to her children and management of property and estate.
When Maria died, Nocolásita, one of Maria's younger sisters married Antonio Valenzuela. Antonio was very mean to Nicolása. He would come home drunk and threaten her with his shaving knife. He would ride in on his horse and lasso her, dragging her on the ground and laughing with a loud thundering voice.
Nicolásita married Antonio, because he kept threatening to take Benancio, so she would never see him again. Antonio Valenzuela finally stopped coming around.
Nicolásita never had any children of her own, but she helped raise a lot of nieces and nephews in the family, including Benancio.

In the Probate court for Lincoln County,at the adjourned September 1903 term-

to the Hon. Francisco Gomez, Probate Judge of said county-

In Re" Guardianship of Jennie Gill, Dona Gill, Alice Gill, William Gill and Estella Gill wards.
Now comes Fernando Herrera, Guardian of said wards, and shows to the court here that Jennie and Alice Gill have married off and have left the house of your guardian; that William Gill now aged about nineteen years and Dona Gill who has reached his majority, have both left the house of said guardian and refuse to have said guardian care for them further; that Estella Gill aged about fifteen years is still under said guardians care and protection; that Newman Gill aged about eighteen years refused to accept the care and protection of your guardian- Your orator Fernando Herrera further shows to the court that the only estate belonging to these wards is twenty two head of cattle counting the calves; that no income is derived from these cattle, on the contrary they are a source of expense to the estate.
That the said ward Estella Gill has arrived at an age when she should have the advantages of an education, and have decent clothes to wear, and have expenditures made for her in the way of school and other books, to the end that she may grow into a useful and intelligent woman.
That as above stated there is no income from the body of said wards estate, however your orater receives or will receive from now on, from the Government of the United States, a pension of thirty two 32/100 dollars every three months, commencing on the tenth day of August 1903.
Wherefore your orator now prays the court for an order granting him the privilege to expend said pension money to educate, maintain and clothe the said ward Estella gill, and such other wards above named who may come back to your orator and seek his care and protection, while he is their guardian-

Fernando Herrera

She married (4) JAMES SALSBERRY 1895.

Notes for M
ARÍA MANUELA MARTINEZ HERRERA:
I was looking through yet another book about Billy the Kid. I saw a picture of Charlie Bowdre, with his wife standing beside him. I remember thinking could she be related, she looked like family.
So, I started looking for other books with Charlie Bowdre, till I found information on this lady. I was so excited, one book said she was Fernando Herrera's daughter. I not only discovered this, but I also found that "Doc" Scurlock married another daughter of Fernando Herrera.
The more I researched and read books the more desperate I became in fitting all the pieces of our family together.
Fernando Herrera, was the marksman who shot Charlie Crawford from the Montano Store on July 17, 1978 in the Lincoln County War.
Fernando was around 41 at the time of the Lincoln County War. Manuelita became a widow. She married again and began a new life after Charlie Bowdre was killed.
Charlie was killed December 23, 1880, at Stinking Springs, New Mexico, by Pat Garrett's posse. The same day they captured Billy the Kid and the rest of his gang.
Charlie wanted to stop that way of life and settle down with his wife Manuela. He wrote a letter to Lea asking him to write to Govenor Wallace for a pardon the same month he was killed.
Manuelita must have been very lonely, since Charlie was always on the go.
The day they brought his body home, Manuelita went crazy hitting the man over the head with a branding iron, yelling, kicking, and pounding on Pat Garrets chest.

12. JENNIE HERRERA6 GILL (MARÍA ALTA GRACIA MARTINEZ5 HERRERA, JOSÉ FERNANDO ARCHULETTA4, PEDRO ALCANTAR BUSTOS3, JOSÉ JOAQUIN ARCHULETTA2, TOMAS1) was born March 19, 1881 in Nogal, Lincoln Co., New Mexico, and died December 13, 1913 in Glencoe, Lincoln Co., New Mexico. She married SOLOMON I MIRABAL SÁNCHEZ December 06, 1900 in Ruidoso, Lincoln Co., New Mexico, son of JOSÉ SÁNCHEZ and TELESFORA MIRABAL. He was born July 15, 1878 in Tularosa, Dona Ana Co., New Mexico, and died November 1952 in Ruidoso, Lincoln Co., New Mexico.

Notes for J
ENNIE HERRERA GILL:

My mother Teresita would tell me a story about a beautiful girl in the family, which she believed to be Jennie Herrera Gill. Jennie was the oldest daughter of William James Norris Gill and Maria Alta Gracia Martinez Herrera.
Jennie was very beautiful, and the man she married was an English man. He told the family that he was going to take her to England and no one would ever see her again.
For several years I searched for Jennie. It turns out that Jennie was going by the name of Josefita.
When William Gill died in1893, Jennie was the oldest of all the children she was nineteen. Sisters Alice (Alicia) , Maria Estella the youngest, was my mother's grandmother, brothers Macedonio (Donio),
William (Julian) and Newman, all of which went along with their mother Maria Alta Gracia to live with their grandfather Fernando Herrera and his second wife Marta Rodriquez. Fernando must have given the children the Spanish names, since he spoke very little English. He raised the children till they became of age or married.
Jennie (Josefita) married Solomon Mirabal Sanchez, my great grandfather's brother Manuel Mirabal Sanchez.
Solomon and Josefita were married in Glencoe, at the San Isidro Church.
They had seven children, Virginia, Jose Enrique, Solomon, Telesfora, Eduvigen, Anatalia, and Maria Consuelo.
Josefita died on October 1913, six months after their last child Maria Consuelo, born April 22,1913.
I had the opportunity to visit with Solomon and Josefita's daughter Eduvigen Sánchez-Silva on March 18th and 19th, 1998 at her home in Roswell.
Eduvigen was born April 23, 1908 in Glencoe, New Mexico. when her mother Josefita died she was only five years old. So she couldn't recall anything about her mother except what people had told her.
Her father Solomon went out of his mind with grief when his wife died. He sold everything, their house, their car and started going out and not coming back for days. Solomon was a very handsome man, he was tall, fair skin light chestnut hair and eyebrows.
The kids went to live with Solomon's mother, Telesfora Trujillo Mirabal-Sánchez-Gonzalez. Who had remarried after her husband Antonio Sánchez died in a horse accident. Telesfora had small children of her own since she had remarried to Prospero Gonzales.
Nicolása helped with some of the kids, Nicolása Herrera was Josefita's Aunt. Eduvigen loved her Nicolásita , was like a mother to her.
Solomon remarried to Manuelita Martinez Sánchez, four years later, on February 3, 1917. Manuelita was about twenty years and didn't want any of Solomon's children to live with them.
Soon some of them would stay there and Manuelita would work them very hard. One day Eduvigen, told her sister Anatalia to stand up for herself, well she did and after that day things changed. They eventually became a close family.
When Eduvigen lived with Nicolása, she would pass by her Aunt Alicia's house on the way to school. Aunt Alice (Alicia) Gill-Hale was Eduvigen's mother's younger sister. Alice was married to Peter Hale, son of Lower Hale. Aunt Alice would call to her to come closer, then she would tie her shoes, button her coat, or just fuss over her. Eduvigen said they were good people.
Eduvigen recalled visiting Fernando Herrera her great-great-grandfather in Alamogordo where he lived.
Aunt Nicolása ,

EWMAN HERRERA GILL:
Newman and Rita lived in a house across the river going north. Both Rita Sánchez and Manuel Sánchez were given that land by their parents. Rita was Manuel's cousin. Manuel gave that house to his daughter Amanda Gill Sánchez who was married to Louis Baca Torres. The two houses were up there with only a small arroyo between them.
Years later, the house that my grandparents lived in was donated to the Church of God. Both houses were later torn down to make the highway.
