The Day Estella Died

She had been in bed for about a year. She had a big black tumor on her left Shoulder and her leg had started to shrivel up.
She died in the living room. that's where they had her bed.
Her daughter Amanda had just had Billy. So they didn't want to tell her right away. Amanda was trying to get in the room and Angelina, held her back, so she wouldn't see her mother. Angelina was Porfirio's wife. Porfirio Gonzales was Manuel Sánchez's half-brother.
They put Estella's body on a table on the porch. She had a black cat that she adored, he lay on her neck. After she was buried they never saw her cat ever again.
They had many (carros de caballo) wagons with horses. The men went and bought some lumber to make a box and the placed her on the wagon. They drove behind in their Model T Car.
It seemed like it took for ever to get to the San Isidro Church. After they all went back home, everything was so quiet.
They parked the wagon back under the peach tree by the asecia where it was kept.
Some times Teresita would go in the room and talk to
Estella. Estella would defend her. One time Teresita's sister's were picking on her as they often did and Grandma Estella would lock them up in the small bedroom closet. That closet is still there.

Buried in Glencoe, NM at the San Isidro Church.

Manuel was my great-grandfather, he came home from checking on his ranch in Glencoe and Roswell after taking care of some business.
When he walked in he mumbled, he was so sick. So they put him to bed, Max the oldest son went in his black truck (Model A) to Hagerman to get help. On the way a neighbor stopped to talk to him as he opened the gate and they drove in together to get the doctor.
The doctor said there was no hope, that he would die before the night was over, they were so scared he died around 7 o'clock. Manuel's family sent an ambulance for him so he could be buried in Glencoe.
Some of the people moved to Artesia and Hagerman area to farm. There wasn't enough water to farm in the Hondo Valley.
Newman Gill moved Artesia in the 40's, so did my grandfather Louis Torres, but he finally settled in Roswell.

Occasionally Charley and I did get some work to do in the shop. Chiefly it was shoeing horses, patching up broken-down buggies, and repairing mowing machines and other farm implements. Where we could we used bolts and baling wire, but broken rims and some parts of farm machinery had to be welded. One of our first customers was Manuel Sanchez who drove up in an old rickety buggy, sitting on a goatskin over a board across the seat. His brake was wired on and he wanted a welding job. We had not done any of this kind of work yet so we had to hustle around to mix a welding composition of ashes, sand, fiddle rosin, and borax. Manuel watched us skeptically. Then we brought the two ends of the iron to a white heat and stuck them into the compound. While each held a piece on the anvil, I pounded them together, only after we put the iron into the barrel of water and saw the metal did not come apart was I sure the compound had worked, we used it thereafter for that kind of repair work.

When Manuel was a young boy, he had been playing with some eggs of a snake. He was on his way back to the house when he heard a noise like something flying though the air. He started running. Just as he closed the door behind him. The snake kept slamming herself against the door till she died.

Services are scheduled for 2 P.M. Tuesday, July 27, at LaGrone Funeral Chapel for Fernando "Fred" Solsberry, 63, of Roswell, who passed away Friday, July 23, 1999, at a local care center.
The Rev. Michael Lynn Graham, associate pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Santa Fe, will officiate.
Fred was born March 10, 1936. in Fort Stanton to Fernando and Lorencita Montoya Solsberry. His father preceded him in death; his mother, Lorencita Sedillo, survives him in Artesia.
He married Frances G. Garza in December 1971 in Roswell. She survives him at the family home.
Other survivors include his two daughters, Josie Fuller and Corina Webb of Roswell; four stepchildren, Rose Graham of Santa Fe, Becky Escamilla, Jose M. Escamilla and Jesus Escamilla, all of Roswell four sisters, Natalie Sosa, Delia Lopez, Ellie Segura and Serena Salmon; three brothers, Elloy Solsberry Martin Sedillo and Danny Sedillo all of Artesia; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Fred was a Roswell resident since 1971and was a custodian at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell. Arrangements are by LaGrone Funeral Chapel. Roswell Daily Record
